They are led horizontally to the optic nerve and further to the brain. In the deep layer at the bottom we can see the large vessels of the choroid membrane. Expression of the p16 antigen is said to indicate that the HPV genome has been incorporated into the host genome, sort of like a Goa’uld symbiote in a human host. In most cases of high-grade dysplasia, the p16 is both strong and diffuse, as seen here, both in the surface epithelium and in an endocervical gland at the bottom of the image.

It is important to not interpret weak or focal reactivity as a positive.

Diagnosis: High-grade squamous intraepithelial lestion (HSIL) with endocervical gland involvement.
